What is Any.do?

The Any.do calendar is a great competitor to some of the most popular apps out there.

Its basic functionalities largely correspond to those of Google Calendar and Outlook, and the application is updated regularly. The customization options can be improved, but Any.do should still meet the needs of most people.

Any.do is one of the best known names in the field of productivity tools. The company has existed for a decade and has experienced several major iterations in its portfolio.

Originally, it offered its calendar as a standalone application, Cal, but it abandoned it in 2014, integrating its functionalities into its main platform.

Any.do is available for free but you can upgrade to a premium membership to get access to even more features.

Features

When it comes to features, Any.do's free offering is very limited. It's just a list and not much else. However, if you upgrade to the Premium plan, you'll get some great tools, including filtering tasks and adding integrations. But first, let's look at the list.

1. To-do lists.

When you first open Any.do, you quickly notice that the interface is clear and welcoming.

The list is clearly presented in a large font and you can select multiple filters on the left taskbar.

A lot of programs could be inspired by the Any.do layout.

The default filter is called “today,” and it shows you what you've got planned for, you guessed it, today. Other filters include a list that shows what you're doing over the next seven days, a list of all tasks, and separate lists for work, personal tasks, and more.

Any.do's weekly layout is quite practical, although a bit limited by screen size.

You can set reminders for each task or not, and you'll be notified in your browser or on your phone when they're due, depending on where Any.do is set up.

Defining a due date is also very detailed, which is nice.

2. Google Calendar integration

However, as pleasant as this list is, there's a catch: there's no solid way to look further into the future than seven days in advance, because Any.do doesn't have a calendar (despite having an option for that on the taskbar). The only option you have is to sync your Google calendar with Any.do, which will automatically fill in all of your due dates.

The lack of a built-in calendar is one of Any.do's main flaws.

While syncing directly to Google Calendar might seem like a decent solution, it's just a patch at best. There are a few reasons why you don't want to use Google, such as the company's track record in Confidentiality matter, or if you want to separate events on your Google calendar from your work activities in Any.do.

3. Location-based reminders

That's it, really, for the basic features of Any.do. However, if you decide to upgrade to the Premium plan (we'll come back to the price in the next section), you'll have access to a few other features, the most interesting of which is that of location-based reminders.

Any.do also calls them “mobile location reminders,” because they only work on the mobile app: when you get close to where a task you want to complete is (you can set the distance), you'll get a notification on your phone. This is a great feature for people who keep forgetting to complete a task (like picking up the laundry at the dry cleaner) even though it's two minutes away from work.

Apart from that, the Premium plan offers the ability to add labels to tasks for easy sorting, the ability to define recurring tasks, and custom themes.

4. Mobile app

Any.do was clearly created with the mobile in mind: each panel adapts perfectly to the screen of a smartphone or tablet, and we had no problem using it on mobile.

The app is as smooth on mobile as it is on desktop, and you'll get reminder notifications on your phone as a bonus.

5. Interface

Any.do has a smooth interface that works as expected, even if it is a bit sparse on some points.

Switching from task to task and view to view is easy, as is editing events. However, some editing options are not very intuitive, such as changing the due date of a recurring task.

Some of these issues are resolved in the premium version, which adds to the somewhat negative impression of the app in terms of balancing its free and paid features.

All versions have active support and are generally uniform in their functionality and interface. The transition from the mobile version to using the application in the browser is seamless and works exactly as expected. Initial setup and registration are quick and without unnecessary interruptions. The application does not try to impose its premium subscription on you at every stage, as some of its competitors do, even if the absence of some features in the free version goes in the same direction.

Any.do is free by default, including the calendar portion of the app. Some features are locked behind the premium subscription, including the ones that users are used to getting for free. Nonetheless, the free version of Any.do should be more than enough for the average user's needs.

Any.do claims that upgrading to a premium membership will save you even more time.

Some of the most notable benefits of buying a premium subscription include recurring reminders, interface customization, color tagging, location reminders, and integration with specific apps, like WhatsApp.

Some of these features shouldn't be critical for most users, but those coming from other apps might be bothered by the lack of default tagging and recurring reminders.
