In this article, I discuss what AI art is, how it works, its emergence and popularity in the art world, and its potential applications.

What's unique about this piece of art is that it's an AI-generated piece of art.

In other words, the artists used a machine learning algorithm to create such a piece of art.

While numerous such sales have taken place since then, this one has highlighted how AI is changing the art world.

What is AI-created art?

Art created by AI refers to artificial intelligence that uses neural networks to create new images that have never been seen before.

In other words, AI developers use a data set of images to train a machine learning algorithm to generate new concepts based on what it has learned.

The results can be incredibly realistic or completely abstract, depending on the artist's vision.

How does art created by AI work?

You can use machine learning and AI tools to create art.

Thanks to AI artwork generators, the artists provide a text that generates the AI artwork.

That said, there are various machine learning algorithms for art created by AI.

1. Generative Antagonist Networks (RAG)

RAGs are neural networks that can be used to create realistic images.

These networks consist of two parts:

  • A Generator That Creates New Data
  • A discriminator that tries to guess what information is real and what information is false.

The generator gets better at manufacturing false data that the discriminator cannot recognize as false.

Then, the discriminator improves in the detection of false data.

This process continues until the generator creates data that cannot be distinguished from real data.

A creative adversarial network is another type of neural network that can be inventive when generating art.

2. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN)

AI systems can also use convolutional neural networks (CNN) to create art.

CNNs are a type of neural network that AI artists use for image recognition.

They work by taking an image and breaking it down into smaller pieces or convolutions.

The CNN then processes each convolution to extract features from the image, then recombines the elements to create a new image.

The AI then repeats this process to create different versions of the same image or new images.

3. Neural Style Transfer (NST)

Human creativity can also be used to manipulate neural networks and create art.

In NSTs, digital art is created by taking the content of one image and the style of another painting and combining them to create a new one.

The content of an image is the subject matter, while style is how the image is composed with respect to elements such as the Color, brush strokes, etc.

By training a neural network on a data set of images, it can learn to extract content and style from an image and combine them to create a new image.

Emergence of Art created by AI

Visual art through image generators is one of the ways that AI has become creative.

Computing and deep learning have paved the way for various machine learning algorithms that can be used to create art.

While the creative process has traditionally involved factors such as talent and inspiration, AI is changing the game by allowing anyone to create art.

With the advent of photorealistic image generators, anyone can create realistic images without much artistic talent.

The value of a work of art was once based on elements such as the artist's reputation, the rarity of the work, and its historical context. With computer-generated art, one can find the value of the input image, the algorithm used, and the creator's intention.

3. Meaning

As computer art becomes more realistic and lively, it also takes on new meanings.

With computer art generators, users can create images that convey specific messages or feelings.

Since the various works of art created are created by algorithms, there are still multiple limits to what AI-created art can produce.

While AI technology has advanced a lot and the creation process has become automated, it is still difficult to generate realistic images.

AI paintings involving humans and different body parts (including hands, faces, and torsos) are still far from reality - we'll get to that in the next section.

At this point, AI works and abstract artistic creation go hand in hand.

Here are the main ways to achieve AI-created art from ordinary art:

  • Quality : One of the main ways to spot art created by AI is its lack of quality. While computer programs can generate realistic images, they often lack the nuance and detail of images created by human artists.

  • Very saturated colors : Seeing images that are excessively over-processed is usually another sign that the AI created the art; while other artists can use saturation to achieve an effect, they often do so in a more subtle way than AI-generated works.

The Future of Art Created by AI

OpenAI Launched the General Trend of AI-Created Art by Opening Dall-E 2 to the general public.

That said, no one can predict what the future holds.

With Tools Such as Jasper Art, Photosonic, Midjourney, Nightcafe, Google Deep Dream and many others, many stakeholders are interested in the future of art created by AI.

Such interest means that the future of computer art is likely to be positive. While it is impossible to predict what will happen, we can expect the continued development of computer-generated art.


Ai-created art is a new and exciting field that is only in its infancy.

Although the quality of AI-generated images has yet to equal that of human-made works of art in some respects, it is improving rapidly.

At the same time, there are areas where technology has (subjectively) supplanted human creativity.

It will be interesting to see how art created by AI develops in the years to come.

  • Will it become more realistic?
  • Will we see more abstract works?
